The War Museum of Athens was established in 1975 with the purpose of exhibiting the great and crucial moments of war history as well as presenting the struggles for freedom of the Greek nation from ancient times to the present day.

The permanent exhibition area of the Museum takes the visitor from the Stone Age savagery to the first crude weaponry of the Bronze Age, continues to the endless clashes within the Byzantine period and the Frankish rule, the epic Greek War of Indepedence and then the burning era starting with the Balkan Wars, through the First World War and from the decisive German invasion to the end of the Great War.

Except from the permanent exhibition, there is also an important and well-organized library in the Museum and special commemorative exhibition regarding the first airplanes and airmen at the museum’s ground floor.
